5S Takes a Front Seat at NIC Global

September, 2009

“What is 5S?” you might ask. At first, it may look like it stands for:

  1. Scrounge
  2. Steal
  3. Stash
  4. Scramble
  5. Search

But with deeper focus and exploration, you will find the real version—a set of five Japanese principles:

  1. Seiri: Short
  2. Seiton: Simplify
  3. Seiso: Shine
  4. Seiketsu: Standardize
  5. Shitsuke: Sustain

5S requires on-going commitment and accountability at all company levels to be successfully implemented and maintained.

NIC has practiced 5S for years, but is renewing its efforts and raising the bar on expectations for both the shop floor and office.

NIC has strengthened its commitment to 5S throughout the plants by sorting out unused equipment and tools, refreshing and standardizing shadow boards, auditing employee participation and area management, providing scheduled and measured maintenance, and training employees in the core principles of 5S.
